Hotel Encouraged to Use Local Coffee Products

Tourism accommodations like hotels, restaurants and cafes are encouraged to use local coffee products amidst the coffee product competition from abroad.

“I expected either in the cafe or hotel should be bold to highlight the local coffee. The product is already there, but not many, that’s what we want to push,” said the Head of Sub-Directorate of Overseas Promotion Directorate General of Processing and Agricultural Product Marketing of Agricultural Ministry, Wayan G Widhi Adnyana, in Kuta.

He said coffee from indonesia is one of the typical drink that many consumers from abroad look for such as from the United States, Japan and Germany.

But he regretted that, if there is tourism practitioner who does not sell local coffee.

“There has to be a pioneer who dared to bring up the coffee so the coffee would appear to be an expensive price,” he said.

As for the overseas marketing, he held the promotion every year to several countries including Korea in the end of next November, Japan, and United States.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Badung regency, Suryawan Rai said that, since the former time, tourism actors have prioritized local products like coffee to be offered to consumers.

However, it should be a preferrence to the guests in accordance with a menu offered such as a local coffee with Balinese flavor, luwak coffee, or import coffee.

“We prioritize the local coffee to the guests. And they really like the local coffee because it has a flavor and delicious and different aroma,” he said.

Whilst, in terms of quality, the local coffee also competes with imported coffee, one of them is luwak coffee that hunted by many foreign tourists.

Meanwhile, Indonesia could easily become the world’s second largest producer of coffee as the country has large coffee plantations.

Currently Indonesia is the third largest producer after Brazil and Vietnam, Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Syarifuddin Hasan said.

Indonesia, however, needs to promote its coffee as the quality of Indonesian coffee is competitive facing coffee from other producing countries, Syarifuddin said in Nusa Dua, Bali on Tuesday night.

Development of Indonesia’s coffee industry will concern the interest of large number of people as the industry involves many small businesses and cooperatives, he said.

He said Indonesia needs to at least maintain its positions as the third largest producers of coffee in the world. The country is the second largest producer of robusta coffee after Vietnam.

“If necessary our position could be raised to become the second largest after Brazil,” he said.
