Balinese Starling’s Theft Triggered by High Selling Price

Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA) assessed Bali starling’s theft still occurred in some areas of the island was triggered by the tempting selling price of endangered species.

“The selling price of Bali starling is remaining high, i.e. the range of Rp17, 5 million per tail, thus price triggering the theft,” said the Head of Conservation in Region II BKSDA Bali, I Ketut Catur Warbawa, amidst the bird release in Sibang, Badung regency.

He explained that, in addition to selling prices which remaining high, the possibility of other causes is the demand is still high since the birds including endangered species that many people would like to have it.

“We’re actually merely known a little why theft is widespread, whereas the birds captive either commercialized or not has run by individuals or foundations,” he said.

Warbawa said the area where theft is fairly common occurred is in Taman Nasional Bali Barat, Jembrana regency, which is the original habitat of birds as an endemic fauna of Bali.

He gave an example, some time ago the bird breeding in the region were broken by unscrupulous irresponsible party.

“In addition to the park, we also indicate attempted theft in the area of Nusa Penida, Klungkung regency. Number of tools like trappers was found that we thought its function to catch starlings,” he said.

Today it continues to monitor and suppress the occurrence of such action by deploying a number of intelligence personnel and routine operations to the field.

Meanwhile Begawan Foundation released eight Bali starlings as yield of breeding at the captivity, in the respective region.

“Eight birds which were released over the age of five months, and is considered to have been able to feed themselves in the wild,” said the Administrator of Begawan Foundation, Ridha Mubdi Annafi Setiawan.

Eight Bali starlings are the result of breeding conducted by the foundation.

According to him, the island’s endemic species released into nature, because it is considered that they are able to adapt to the wild and also in terms of sufficient age to be independent.

The release of eight Bali starlings held around the Green School, international school located in Sibang. The activities get a very good appreciation of the local community and students and teachers at the respective school.

The purpose of the releasing animal activity, in addition to increase the number of population of Bali starlings in the wild, it is also used as an observation means by all party who love its existence.

“Prior to the release of the bird, we have been doing outreach to communities in seven hamlets in the surrounding region,” said Ridha.

It was delivered in the campaign, the point is to get the surrounding people to preserve the endangered animals by not capturing or hunting them because the doer will be liable for both fine and imprisonment.
