Longevity News and Review provides readers with the latest information in breakthroughs pertaining to the extension of the healthy human lifespan. Omega-3 Supplementation May Slow the Aging Process
Jan Kiecolt-Glaser, from Ohio State University (Ohio, USA), and colleagues enrolled overweight but healthy middle-aged and older adults in a study lasting four months. Subjects were given either 2.5 grams or 1.25 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, both of which were standardized to contain a 7:1 ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) to docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); a placebo group served as controls. In both omega-3 supplemented groups, white blood cell (leukocyte) telomeres actually lengthened; oxidative stress was reduced by about 15% (as compared to placebo). Observing that: “The data suggest that lower [omega-6:omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid] ratios can impact cell aging,” the study authors conclude that: “The triad of inflammation, oxidative stress, and immune cell aging represents important pre-disease mechanisms that may be ameliorated through nutritional interventions.”

Dr. Klatz observes: “ Telomeres are the endcaps of chromosomes, the shortening of which has been associated with the aging process. Dietary supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids may lengthen telomeres and reduce oxidative stress.”

Apple Juice May Help Promote Healthy Weight
Stephan W. Barth, from the Max Rubner Institut (Germany), and colleagues enrolled 68 obese, non-diabetic men, to receive either 750 mL of cloudy apple juice daily, or a control beverage, for four weeks. The men who consumed the cloudy apple juice displayed 1% reduction in total body fat (as compared to 0.2% in the control group). Further, the researchers observed that those men with a specific gene polymorphism (IL6-174 G showed a 2% reduction in total body fat after 4 weeks of cloudy apple juice. The study authors submit that: “The observed diet–gene interaction might be a first indication for the impact of individual genetic background on [cloudy apple juice]-mediated bioactivity on obesity-associated comorbidities.”

Remarks Dr. Goldman: “Cloudy apple juice, juice in which the apple pectin and starch are retained, is rich in polyphenols, compounds that have been shown in previous studies to exert a variety of health effects. German researchers report that a daily glass of polyphenol-rich apple juice decreases body fat, in obese men.”

Blueberry Compound Helps to Lower Blood Pressure
Daniel Riche, from the University of Mississippi (Mississippi, USA), and colleagues enrolled 60 men and women, average age 54 years, who had elevated cholesterol levels. The mean average systolic blood pressure was 127.4 mmHg, and diastolic blood pressure 79.3 mmHg, at the study’s start. Participants either received daily doses of pterostilbene (250 mg), pterostilbene (100 mg) plus grape extract (200 mg), or placebo, for 8 weeks. Among the subjects who received pterostilbene only, systolic blood pressure dropped by 7.8 mmHg and diastolic blood pressure dropped by 7.3 mmHg.

Comments Dr. Klatz: “Found abundantly in blueberries, pterostilbene is a potent antioxidant compound. Reporting that daily supplementation of pterostilbene helps to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure, this team adds to the mounting evidence relating to the compound’s potential role in cardiometabolics.”
