Twelve People Bitten by Rabid Dog

Twelve people were bitten by rabid dog during a visit at Baler Bale Agung Village market in Jembrana Regency, Bali.

“I am one of the twelve people,” said Nyoman Sumiarti, recently bitten by the black dog while shopping at the Baler Bale Agung Village. Also Komang Arimbawa, a six-year-old boy, was bitten by this dog. “ This dog was running at the market and he bit anyone who would come across his path,” he said.

After biting twelve people, the dog successfully was overpowered by officers from the District Health Office of Jembrana. Immediately the dog was tested, to see if the dog was suffering from rabies virus.

In Jembrana District of Health Office said the number of dog bites in this area is quite high. In October 2012 there has been 60 cases, while September and August, respectively had 98 cases and 107 cases.

The Department of Livestock, Agriculture and Forestry was running out of vaccine. That is why vaccination against rabies also faltered.

“ We have run out of stock,” said Head of Livestock Department of Animal Husbandry, Agriculture And Forestry Jembrana, Ni Wayan Purniawati.

According Kurniawati, submissions of vaccines for dogs of Bali Government were stalled since last May. The mass vaccination program until June had halted.

Anyone bitten or scratched by an animal in a rabies-affected area should immediately wash the wound well with soap and water, apply an antiseptic such as povidone iodine to the wound and see a doctor as soon as possible.
