Multivitamin Exerts “Modest but Significant” Reduction in Cancer Risk
J. Michael Gaziano, from Harvard Medical School (Massachusetts, USA), and colleagues analyzed data collected in the Physicians’ Health Study (PHS) II, that includes 14,641 male U.S. physicians, initially age 50 years or older. Subjects received a daily multivitamin or equivalent placebo, and were followed for an average of 11.2 years. During multivitamin treatment, there were 2,669 confirmed cases of cancer, including 1,373 cases of prostate cancer and 210 cases of colorectal cancer, with some men experiencing multiple events. A total of 2,757 (18.8%) men died during follow-up, including 859 (5.9%) due to cancer. Analysis of the data indicated that men taking a multivitamin had a modest 8% reduction in total cancer incidence. The researchers found that a multivitamin significantly reduced the risk of total cancer (excluding prostate cancer – the early stage of which was the cause of half of all incident cancers in the study). There were no statistically significant reductions in individual site-specific cancers, including colorectal, lung, and bladder cancer, or in cancer mortality. Reporting that: “Daily multivitamin use was associated with a reduction in total cancer among 1312 men with a baseline history of cancer,” the study authors conclude that: “In this large prevention trial of male physicians, daily multivitamin supplementation modestly but significantly reduced the risk of total cancer.”

Dr. Klatz observes: “A daily multivitamin supplement mimics healthy fruit and vegetable compounds. Analysis of data collected on 14,641 male physicians reveals the cancer preventive effect of long-term daily multivitamin supplementation.”

Active Lifestyle Promotes Health, Being Sedentary Raises Risk of Death
Sitting around compromises health of people- even if they meet typical physical activity guidelines, report researchers from the University of Leicester (United Kingdom). Emma Wilmot and colleagues completed a study that combined the results of 18 studies and included a total of 794,577 subjects. Analysis of the data revealed that those who sit for long periods have a two fold increase in their risk of diabetes, heart disease and death. Importantly, associations were independent of the amount of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity undertaken, suggesting that even if an individual meets typical physical activity guidelines, their health may still be compromised if they sit for long periods of time throughout the day. Observing that the average adult spends 50-70% of their time sitting, the study authors conclude that: “Sedentary time is associated with an increased risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular and all-cause mortality; the strength of the association is most consistent for diabetes.”

Remarks Dr. Goldman: “Extrapolating from the finding that sitting for protracted periods of time increases risk of diabetes, heart disease, and death, it follows that an active lifestyle promotes health and longevity.”

Fish Lowers Stroke Risk
University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill (North Carolina, USA) researchers completed a meta-analysis of 16 published studies involving a total of 402,127 participants, with an average 12.8 years of follow-up. The team revealed that consuming five or more portions of fish per week associated with a 13% reduction in the risk of all types of stroke. The study authors conclude that: “Accumulated evidence generated from this meta-analysis suggests that fish intake may have a protective effect against the risk of stroke, particularly ischemic stroke.”

Comments Dr. Klatz: “Wild-caught “fatty fish” such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, and trout – is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a compound that has been linked in previous studies to cardiovascular benefits, particularly benefits for reducing coronary heart disease risk. Increased dietary consumption of these types of fish may lower stroke risk by up to 13%.”
