The Balinese traditional security man or “pecalang” is asked to watch the sacred objects in the temple or “pratima” align with the frequent case of theft.
“The active role of indigenous village system in maintaining safety of sacred places could be done by utilizing pecalang or security staff,” The Chief of Culture Department of Bali Province, I Ketut Suastika said in Denpasar.
That is not sufficient, the indigenous villagers are also asked to act actively in maintaining safety of the temple.
One way is by encouraging the habit of “mekemit” or vigil all night without sleep in order to prevent any unexpected things.
“Participation of all levels of people in securing their own area to be able to prevent any theft or crime takes place there,” he said.
According to him, if needed, a specific guard should be done for twenty-four hours around the area of sacred places.
