Forget Bali, Our Beaches are Better, Say Aussies

Six out of ten Australians rate their own beaches higher than those of their most popular overseas destinations, research by Tourism Australia has revealed as quoted from Travel Blackboard.

Comparing six of Australia’s most well known coastlines – Queensland’s Gold Coast, Tropical North and Whitsundays, Western Australia’s Broome/Exmouth/Ningaloo Reef, South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula/Kangaroo Island and Tasmania’s Freycinet Peninsula/Wineglass Bay – with the shores of perennial overseas favourites Bali, Fiji and Thailand, the Domestic Consumer Demand Survey took into account the opinions of 1,200 “high yielding” Aussie travellers, assessing the relative appeal and factors most influencing destination choices.

With 60 percent of respondents rating Australian beaches higher than those on offer elsewhere, TNQ and Broome/Exmouth/Ningaloo ranked as the top two beach destinations, while the Gold Coast and The Whitsundays also placed higher than those overseas.

The appeal of Aussie beaches was further evidenced by the 35 percent of respondents who said they would be more likely to holiday on an Australian beach. By comparison, only 24 percent said they would more likely take off overseas.

Although young couples without children expressed a preference for international holidays, older travellers without kids ranked Broome/Exmouth/Ningaloo highest, while The Whitsundays ranked highest among the all-important family market.

When considering a destination, value for money was cited as the most important factor followed by natural beauty, climate safety and accommodation options.

Interestingly, only 38 percent of respondents considered Australia a more expensive destination, compared to 32 percent saying overseas.

Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said the study proved the “enduring appeal” of the Australian beachside holiday among Aussie families, saying the study was “proof positive that our country offers some of the most beautiful, safe and high quality beach holiday experiences in the world”.
