Methanol Arak Destroyed the Image of Bali Tourism

Tourism Department of Bali Province believed that the circulation of arak mixed with methanol among tourists had caused a new problem and influenced the image of Bali.

“There are some problems that is frequently questioned, service, cleanliness, and traffic jam. Now another new problem arose, which is methanol arak,” the Head of Tourism department Bali Ida Bagus Kade Subhiksu said.

The last problem arose since an Australian tourist died in Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat. The government of Australia questioned the problem.

Until now there is no real action to reduce the circulation of traditional drink mixed with methanol so that there is no more victim.

The government of Australia also gave suggestion or advice that the tourists who visit Bali should but labeled drinks, so it will be safe for drinks.

“We assumed that one of the causes of mixed alcoholic drink circulation is the tax that extent to hundreds percent,” he said.

The secretary of PHRI Bali Perry Markus hoped that they could coordinate with Health Department and BPOM that could issue petition about the methanol arak.

“If there is any petition from the Health department, we will be brave enough to remind the tourists not to consume the alcoholic drinks,’ he said.

This is bigger than the problem of service and cleanliness, as a travel agent located in Australia I have noticed alot of tourists who normally go to bali, probably around 100 ask for a new destination and this is only from my single shop. It is a very sad situation that needs to be addressed quickly.
