By S.BS. Surendran

Adapting Feng Shui can enhance the feel of your place of dwelling or work. It creates the right ambience, balance and ushers in sense of serenity. Feng Shui can be a design tool of Interior Design providing methods to change your surroundings, to create harmony and balance in your living and working environment. To ensure proper balance of Chi (energy), each home must contain the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood, which can be added through such things as colors, fabrics, home accessories, lighting, cushions, mirrors, fountains. A balance of these in your home leads to balance in your life.

Every person, place and thing is alive with the universal energy called “ Ch’i”. Everything is connected by this vital energy which is always changing. When we integrate the Feng Shui principles into our live, we see and interact with the world in a new powerful way.

The art of Feng Shui is the art of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony with your environment.

Either in an existing home or when you are planning a new home the focus is always on the Living room to make as Living room is the “Room for Living”. This room is a place of gathering as it embraces family, friends and acquaintances in a relaxed style. To enrich the lifestyle and create areas like reading, chatting, working and relaxing in your living room the design has to be conducive and tasteful.

Prior to investing on a couch or decorating your space looks around with an objective eye. Whether it is redesigning the whole house or just a room, be creative, visualize the possibilities and combinations you can adapt in terms of colors, textures, furnishings, it should reflect your passion and style.

Look for designs with friendly detailing. To increase the sense of comfort and good energy, arrange your living room furniture to form islands that you can move around easily. Appoint corners with any combination of enhancements, such as plants, sculpture, lighting, art and furniture.

Place the most important or larger furniture, often a sofa set such that it commands a view of the room. Then give other seating a nice view, putting everyone at ease and making the room both attractive and comfortable. Bring in life by adding colors in the form of cushion covers, wall rugs or small floor carpets. Create cozy corners which motivate specific activities like formal seating area or a corner to de-stress and relax. To assure ideal views throughout the room, make sure the corners in your living room are clear of clutter. A sense of uncluttered abundance is the key all that’s needed is present and plentiful, yet organized in a way that keeps the space open and livable.

Most importantly your living room need not be large to adapt such a design idea even in a small room you can bring in the concept of segregating your activities and defining them through appropriate decor and furnishings.

Living room decorating expresses a sense of welcome and sets the tone for the rest of your home. By definition the living room is the space in a home that’s most full of life and spirit.
