“Jaja Bulung”, ISS Delegation’s Snack

A typical cake of Gianyar Regency, “Jaja Bulung” was exhibited at the International Seaweed Symposium (ISS) in Nusa Dua, Bali, on 22-26 April 2013.

“Exhibiting ‘Jaja Bulung’ is a pride for Gianyar community. The cake is usually sold at the market in the afternoon. But now it has been upgraded to food for ISS delegation,” said the Head of Monitoring and Preservation Section of Fishery and Maritime Affair Department Gianyar Regency, Pande Putu Sri Ratnawati.

Jaja Bulung is made of dried seaweed, then it is boiled and mixed with brown sugar. After that it is distilled and cut as we like it.

“The cake is usually served with grated coconut. “It is delicious to be served in the afternoon or befire sunset,” said Ratnawati.

Jaja Bulung served to the ISS delegation from 50 countries at BNDCC, Nusa Dua, Badung Regency is cooked by Ni Made Suartini, a cake seller at Pasar Senggol, Gianyar.

“Gianyar is not only has seaweed potential, but also its Jaja Bulung that has been known by Balinese people,” she said.

The government of Gianyar Regency also have campaigned “Gemar Makan Rumput Laut” (Fond of Eating Seaweed) as an effort to implement the food diversification program.
