Illegal Immigrants Ship Crews Threatened Punishment of Five Years
Two of the crews from Alor, East Nusa Tenggara, who was caught carrying 96 illegal immigrants from Iran in the Strait of Badung, Bali, under sentence of five years in prison.
“They violate the Shipping Act, under penalty of five years,” said Director of NAVY Commissioner Tubuh Musyaref interviewed in Pecatu.
According to him, the two crew members who were not identified were still secured in the Bali Police to be investigated.
He revealed that cases of trafficking are the biggest case he had ever handled during his duty in this island.
Besides threatened of violating Shipping Law, the two suspects are also handled by the team of “People Smuggling” to reveal the existence of a network involved in the case.
Meanwhile, the 96 were illegal immigrants are now handled by the Immigration for further action.
“We have to submit them to the Immigration for deportation,” he said. Tubuh estimates that some of the 96 illegal immigrants arrived in Bali through Ngurah Rai International Airport before they boarded a wooden boat from Tanjung Benoa Beach.
“About 13 people have passports, and they come through the airport in Bali. They also seem to have traveling because they carry a lot of souvenirs and clothes they wear,” he said.
He stated that it is a new mode that carried illegal immigrants when NAVY officers arrested about a mile from the Bali Benoa Harbour on Sunday (12/5) morning.
Previously, 96 illegal immigrants were lodged at three hotels in Denpasar because existing immigration detention centers in Jimbaran has been full.
