Longevity News and Review provides readers with the latest information in breakthroughs pertaining to the extension of the healthy human lifespan.  These news summaries are compiled by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M; www.worldhealth.net), a non-profit medical society composed of 24,000 physician and scientist members from 110 nations, united in a mission to advance biomedical technologies to detect, prevent, and treat aging related disease and to promote research into methods to retard and optimize the human aging process.   Dr. Ronald Klatz, M.D., D.O., A4M President, and Dr. Robert Goldman, M.D., Ph.D., D.O., FAASP, A4M Chairman, physician co-founders of the anti-aging medical movement, distill these headlines and provide their insightful commentary.

Green Spaces Promote Well-Being
Mathew White, from the University of Exeter (United Kingdom), and colleagues analyzed data collected from more than 10,000 UK residents gathered between 1991 and 2008. The team revealed that people with access to numerous green areas reported less mental distress and higher levels of life satisfaction, as compared to those without such access,  This link between green spaces and greater well-being held true even after the researchers accounted for confounding factors. Interestingly, the positive impact of green spaces on well-being was equal to about one-third that of being married and equal to one-tenth of being employed vs. unemployed.  Reporting that: “ individuals have both lower mental distress and higher well-being when living in urban areas with more green space,” the study authors conclude that:  “the potential cumulative benefit at the community level highlights the importance of policies to protect and promote urban green spaces for well-being.”

Dr. Klatz observes: “In that urbanization poses a potential threat to mental health, previously published studies suggest that urban green spaces, such as parks and gardens, may improve well-being.  This team reports that by enabling city dwellers to reconnect with nature, parks and urban gardens, mental distress may be relieved and life satisfaction improved.”

Fitness Regimen Helps to Lower Blood Pressure
The American Heart Association issued a Scientific Statement in which it summarizes the blood pressure-lowering efficacy of several nondrug approaches and to provide a class of recommendation for their implementation in clinical practice.  Robert D. Brook, Chair of the AHA’s research panel and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan (Michigan, USA), report that exercise-based regimens, including aerobic, dynamic resistance, and isometric handgrip  modalities, have “relatively stronger supporting evidence,” lending the panel to write that: “It is the consensus of the writing group that it is reasonable for all individuals with blood pressure levels >120/80 mmHg to consider trials of alternative approaches as adjuvant methods to help lower blood pressure when clinically appropriate.”

Remarks Dr. Goldman: “Elucidating the merits of nondrug approaches to lower high blood pressure (hypertension), the American Heart Association issues statement in support of aerobic exercise, resistance or strength training and isometric hand grip exercises to address hypertension.”

Apple Compounds Affect Inflammation
Elke Richling, from University of Kaiserslautern (Germany), and colleagues studied the effects of ursanic, oleanic and lupanic pentacyclic triterpenoids found in apple peel for their anti-inflammatory effects, using colon cancer cells that were exposed to the triterpenoids and then stimulated with pro-inflammatory cytokines.  Finding that the apple peel compounds inhibited the expression of IP-10, a gene that is linked to inflammatory disorders including irritable bowel disease, the study authors submit that: “The present study confirms that triterpenoids present in apple peel …  may be implicated in the anti-inflammatory properties of apple constituents, suggesting that these substances might be helpful in the treatment of [irritable bowel disease] as nutrient supplements.”

Comments Dr. Klatz: “Apple peel is an abundant source of triterpenoids – plant-based compounds for which anti-cancer effects are suggested. These researchers report that the triterpenoids extracted from apple peel may influence expression of IP-10, a gene that is linked to inflammatory disorders including irritable bowel disease.”
