Mixed Legong Keraton and Nandir Dance is Reconstructed

Legong Dance in the treasury of Balinese arts is one of classic dances, which from it’s early development from the palace that can only be watched by the King and his family.

As an entertainment, the dancers are mandated to perform Lehigh Dance in front of the King and his family, so the dancers are proud since not all common people can enter the palace.

Legong Dance until now is still exist in development of arts and culture in Bali, the beginning of it’s creation is very long, said a lecturer of Indonesia Arts Institute (ISI ) Denpasar I Nyoman Cerita SS Kar, MSA.

Since four months should he trains Nandir Nirmala Ada Group of Taro customary village Tegallalang district, Gianyar Regency that gets an honour as the arts ambassador of Gianyar Regency to enlighten the 35th Bali Arts Festival (PKB).

The graduate of master program of coreography at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), United State of America and some community figures, such as Kelian Dinas Banjar Taro I Ketut Budiarta, Bendesa Adat Taro Made Wisersa and kelian sekaa Nadir Nirmala Sarwa Ada Wayan Gari have successfully reconstructing the classic arts form.

I Ketut Cemil (late), an artist from Taro Village in the kingdom era was called by the King of Program Palace to perform welcoming Dance like what is performed in palaces in Java.

By relying on the King’s speech drawn in the sketches on the dusty ground, the late I Ketut Cemil mixed it with the existing Nandir Dance.

Because of the effort then legong keraton dance was created telling the journey of the King from Lasem Kingdom who wants to marry Dyah Rangke Sari but his proposal is refused so Prabu Lasem fight against Gegelang kingdom.

In the middle of his journey, Prabu Lesem is stopped by a raven signing that he will be lost but the presentiment is ignored, Prabu Lasem expels the raven and continues his journey to the battle field.

Legong Dance means a very tied movement especially its accentuation by gamelan instruments accompanying it. As a classic dance, Legong Dance puts forward a high artistic element, dynamic, symmetric and regular movement.

In the beginning legong dancers are people from outside the palace selected by the King, so it’s understandable that they are really proud to be able to perform Legong Dance at the palace.

Likely, to the dance creator it is a great honor, as he had the privilege to create a dance from a command of the authority at that era, although his identity has never been exposed to the public.

They don’t mind as long as they are mandated creating based on sincerity and full of locality to the King. That condition almost happens to all classic dances or other traditions developed outside the palace such as Legong, baris, jauk and mask dance.

I Nyoman Cerita added that now is the era that doesn’t follow feudalism, legong has developed rapidly from its quality and quantity.

Legong Keraton dance, for example, came out from the palace in the beginning of 19th century, the women dancers who formerly practiced and performed legong at the palace returned to their villages to teach this type of dance to the surrounding community.

It is based on Balinese is very creative people, so each of their style is slightly different in accordance with the ability to perform it.

Therefore, the styles of Palegongan appeared and spread in several areas in Bali, such as Saba, Peliatan, Bedulu (Gianyar Regency ) village style, Binoh, Kelandis village (Denpasar ) style and some other places in Bali.

From a lot of development areas of Legong dance, only Saba and Peliatan that is still strong until now maintaining its characteristics and could create types of Palegongan dance with various forms.

However, Sekaa Nandir Nirmala Sarwa Ada Desa Adat Taro, Tegallalang, Gianyar regency has uniqueness that is generally performed to complete a big scale ritual held by community and the local customary village.

Legong dance existed in Bali at the beginning was accompanied by instruments called gamelan pelegongan. The sets of gamelan consist of two pairs of gender rambat, gangsa jongkok, a gong, kemong, kempluk, klenang, a pair of kendang krumpungan, suling, rebab, jublag, jegog and gentorang.

As an addition, there is a juru tandak to emphasize characters or as a narrator through song. However, following the popularity of gong kebyar in Bali, finally pelegongan dances can be accompanied by gong kebyar due to its flexibility.

The reconstruction of classic arts performed by 13 girls and instruments involving 50 young artists as an effort to preserve ancient arts so it still be.loved by the next generation.

Nandir dance performed by 13 girls telling a pair of male and female tarum butterflies that are joyfully moving that inspires teenagers in Taro in choosing spouse based on love.

Likely, the performance of “guak ngajang sebun” dance telling a pair of male and female ravens that are collecting materials to make nest.

The dance inspires how hard the life is to prepare ourselves achieving a better future, so we have prosperous life, said I Nyoman Cerita.
