Bali to Contribute to World Peace: Governor

DENPASAR ~

Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika has said the island paradise will contribute to world peace by hosting the 6th Bali Democracy Forum on Nov. 7-8, 2013.

“The Indonesian island resort of Bali serves not only as a world tourism destination but also contributes to world peace through the Bali Democracy Forum,” the governor stated here on Monday.

Pastika noted that through this year’s international event, Bali will share its perspective on democracy and peace with other democratic countries.

He said Bali had established the Institute for Peace and Democracy at Udayana University, and it was inaugurated by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in 2008.

The governor added that the institute will give the younger generation in Indonesia and elsewhere more opportunities to study issues related to democracy and peace.

Pastika explained that Bali is ready to host the Bali Democracy Forum, which will be opened by President Yudhoyono. This year, the theme of the Forum is “Consolidating Democracy in Pluralistic Society”.

Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah and Timor Leste’s President Taur Matan Ruak have confirmed their participation in the 6th Bali Democracy Forum (BDF).

The two neighboring countries’ leaders and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono are scheduled to land at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, on November 6, the airport’s operational head, Major Eko Adi Nugroho, said Wednesday.

The BDF sessions will include a general debate and interactive sessions presenting two ministers as the panelists to discuss two sub-themes of BDF VI, namely “Conducting Free and Fair Elections” and “Building and Strengthening Democratic Institutions”.

BDF aims to develop and intensify dialogs on democracy for improving mutual understanding and appreciation among various nations.
