Feng Shui and Soil Mechanic

By S.BS. Surendran

Every site and building is said to have life and has to be built to perfect proportions based on certain formulae and calculations. Such a building enhances the feel, energy and contributes to the harmony, wealth, health and happiness of the occupants. The science of Feng Shui and Vaastu takes into account the energies radiating from the four compass directions viz., North, East, South and West and it explains in a simple and effective way the selection of site, construction and design of a residence, condominiums, business premises and placement of rooms, décor in the building.

Often some buildings fail, few structurally due to failure of foundation and many due to absence of positive energies and bad quality of soil. Investigating the quality of the soil and then deciding on the foundation of the building is an essential part of land analysis. Hence soil evaluation is important before any construction begins on a property as this  helps in designing the building and the foundation in accordance with the type of soil existing in the property.

Foundation which is at the lowest portion of a structure is the most important aspect of a building. The foundation is much more than a combination of bricks, mortar, concrete, steel etc. The Foundation transmits the load of the super structure to the ground below, distributes the load uniformly to prevent unequal settlement and prevents lateral movement. It also ensures a secure footing for the building and a firm bed over a large bearing area in the plot.

Ensuring that the construction site is free of landslides due to unstable or mining is crucial as the stability of the structure depends upon the strength of the soil which is referred to as “bearing capacity”. The soil at the site should have a good bearing capacity to ensure that the building stands without displacements or sinking. Both in Vaastu and Feng Shui a cracked, sunk or displaced building is considered bad and unsafe too.

Testing the soil prior to commencement of construction provides information on the soil strata, seasonal variations, water table, composition of the soil, rocky base and other vital information. There are many methods to ascertain the bearing capacity of the soil in Soil Mechanics in the science of Feng Shui and Vaastu.

When we analyze  the geographical and geological  aspects  of  a property,  the ancient texts gave a lot of  importance to the  study of  the topography of the land,  the surroundings  and the cosmology of  the  whole universe with its array of stars, planets, continents, rivers, seas, mountains etc. The geological aspect of  soil testing and inspection to ascertain the touch, smell, taste, habitation on the plot and color are quintessential to ensure a good property.

However prior to a comprehensive soil test and land surface analysis the first test would be to relax and walk on the property you propose to invest. Breathing deeply, close your eyes and feels the rays and vibrations of the land if you feel happy and vibrant it signifies the land has positive energy.
