Tourist Visits Influence Small Industry in Bali

The development of micro and small industries (IMK) in Bali influenced by foreign and domestic tourists visited the area, because most of the products are in the form of souvenirs. “IMK in Bali produce various kinds of handicrafts like displayed at the merchandise market which later became a trend in attracting the attention of travelers,” said Head of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Bali, Panusunan Siregar, in Denpasar, on Friday.

Panusunan said that the merchandise market rampantly exist in a number of places in the city of Denpasar and Badung regency with merchants displaying various handicrafts made by the hands of skilled Balinese craftsmen and artisans.

“The results of the IMK craft business is in great demand by foreign tourists and domestic tourists in enjoying holiday on the island,” said Panusunan Siregar.

He describes the production of IMK in Bali during the fourth quarter of 2013 grew by 1.91 percent, but the figure is still lower than the growth in the previous quarter to reach 6.03 percent.

IMK production growth in the fourth quarter of 2013 was not as firm as growth in the third quarter of 2013. It was influenced by the level of foreign and domestic tourist arrivals.

Tourist arrivals to Bali dropped by 4.35 percent from 912,726 people in the third quarter of 2013 to 872,950 people in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Panusunan said if observed in an annual period (y-on-y), the number of foreign tourists to Bali rose up 14 percent from 765,738 people in the fourth quarter of 2012 to 872,950 people in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Momentum like APEC summit, Christmas, New Year, and many national and international events in Bali is one of the catalysts for the development of IMK in Bali.

In another context, Panusunan further said, the interesting part of the tourism business is development of IMK is able to give a double impact on other industries, such as food, accommodation, transportation, entertainment, and exhibition.

“Thus, the developed investment should be placed in the field of tourism that has the competence to work together with other components of tourism,” he said.
