Saraswati, the Holy Day of Knowledge
Saraswati is one of the holiest days which are always celebrated by Balinese Hindu. This is celebrated every six months or on Saturday, Saniscara Umanis Watugunung, based on Balinese calendar. Since Sarasawati is the day believed when knowledge is born, this holy day is mostly celebrated in school or any education institutions by students and scholarship officials.
In Hindu, Saraswati is the Goddess of Knowledge, who protects and showers, all the knowledge in books and literatures.
Saraswati is held to celebrate the day when Goddess Saraswati, showering her blesses in the shape of knowledge to the world. This ceremony is the way of Balinese Hindu to show gratitude to Dewi Saraswati, which because of her gift, human can be a cultured and civilized human kind.
On Saraswati day, books and other documents are attached with offerings. The message of this Holy Day is that the implementation of knowledge should be done with pure heart and honesty.
Besides praying in temple in school, the Saraswati Holy Day is also celebrated with ‘Mesambang Semadhi’, means hold meditation in holy places especially at night, or read manuscript all night long.
The next day is called ‘Banyu Pinaruh’, when people take a bath using kumkuman water, water with a scent of flower, and ended with take bid of yellowish rice.Filed under: Headlines
