Governor Asks Parents Pioneered to Stop Smoking

Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika, asked parents to initiate the campaign to stop smoking because children often imitate the habits of their parents.

“However, I think awareness of each parent is very important because children generally follow them so parents must take the lead to stop smoking,” he said in Denpasar, on Monday.

According to him, besides smoking is bad for health it is also contributed to make the family poor.

“To disseminate the Regulation of No Smoking Area, I think it is quite a lot, it is more necessary for the legal enforcement as the sanctions have been very clear,” he said.

On the other hand, Pastika expected that the cigarette advertisers realize that the danger of smoking cigarettes is far greater than its benefits. It should be the obligation of all parties to promote a healthy Indonesian society.

“If people are healthy, they would be more productive society to achieve prosperity. But if they are sick, obviously they cannot work well and it would be detrimental to everything,” he said.

The former chief of Bali police also invited the entire community to work together to create an environment that is free from cigarette smoke, he also reminded Indonesia is the seventh largest country producing cigarettes and the third country consuming cigarettes in the world after China and India.

Previously, Deputy Health Minister, Ali Ghufron Mukti, said that almost every year prevalence of people who smoke in Indonesia increase, including in the last six years there is a large increase of teens who start smoking.

Ali Ghufron Mukti highly appreciated the provincial government of Bali that has a high commitment, not only to make local regulations, but the Governor of Bali also firmly stop people smoking in hospitals. “His assertiveness should be followed by other provinces,” said Ali Ghufron.

For the commitment and decisiveness of Bali Governor, Made Mangku Pastika, to impart caring attitude towards the dangers of smoking through the application of the law about No Smoking Area, which then completed by Governor Decree on the implementation of No Smoking Area, he received an award from the Ministry of Health.

In addition, the Governor also honored as Leadership International Tuberculosis Control from the Tuberculosis and Lung Disease Union, the award is for being a child protection warrior through tobacco control from the National Commission for Child Protection, as well as the award as a warrior of public health and an honorary member of the Association of Indonesian Public Health Experts (IAKMI).
