Lithuanian Arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine in Bali

A Lithuanian with the initial VL (41 years old) was arrested by Customs and Excise Office personnel at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali, while trying to smuggle four kilograms of methamphetamine.

“He had hid the drug inside his luggage by creating false concealment in the partition,” said Bali’s Chairman of Customs and Excise Office Rahma Subagio here on Tuesday.

According to Rahma, VL arrived at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport from Hong Kong last Monday (Aug 11) at 01.30 a.m. by Hong Kong Airlines. After X-ray examination, a suspicious customs officer checked VL’s luggage and found six packages of methamphetamine weighing 3.9 kilograms.

Meanwhile, Chief of Supervisory and Service Affairs at Bali’s Customs and Excise Office Budi Harjanto noted that the case of drug smuggling from Lithuania or Eastern Europe countries was the first ever to occur in Bali. He suspected that VL is part of a new drug smuggling network aiming for particular group of people in Bali.

Budi admitted that the customs officials had problem when questioning VL because he could not speak English. VL has been charged with violation of Indonesia’s Regulation Number 35/2009 on narcotics and Regulation Number 17/2006 on custom, facing a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail.
