Officers from the Bali Bomb Squad were deployed to one of Denpasar’s largest shopping and leisure complexes after a bomb threat was phoned in.
The Tiara Detawa centre – part of a chain of Tiara supermarkets in Bali – received a threatening phone call at 3.30pm on Monday.
A security official with the company, Parlin, said the caller gave his name as Abdullah.
“The threat was that in a storage locker there were explosives materials,” he said, adding that the caller said: “Be careful, I am not playing around.”
While waiting for police to arrive, security guards immediately cleared the public locker area of the complex, which also contains an outdoor swimming pool, children’s arcade and numerous small shops.
Parlin said the caller did not sound like a local person, but had the “accent of someone from outside Bali.”
Bomb-squad officers searched the area but did not find any explosive devices. Sniffer dogs also did not uncover any explosives.
