One in a Million: Bali Life, an airy painting by late Chinese artist Lee Man Fong, fetched US$3.24 at auction in Hong Kong on Monday. Auction house Sotheby’s said the work, depicting a traditional Balinese village scene and created in the 1960s, was purchased by an Asian collector, and demonstrated that the regional art marked is soaring. Sotheby’s total auction of Asian works of art on Monday amounted to sales of $41 million. Fong moved from China to Indonesia during his formative years and died in 1988. Bali Life now carries the distinction of being the most expensive Southeast Asian painting ever sold.
