Corby Granted Remission but Clemency Not Confirmed

Australian drug-smuggler Schapelle Corby is still waiting for news on her clemency appeal to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, but she will receive a remission on her sentence, delayed since Christmas, it has been announced.

Time Off: Schapelle Corby.

Australian drug-smuggler Schapelle Corby is still waiting for news on her clemency appeal to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, but she will receive a remission on her sentence, delayed since Christmas, it has been announced.

The head of Bali’s main Kerobokan Prison, where Corby and other high-profile foreign inmates are held, I Gusti Ngurah Wiratna, said that 20 foreign inmates including Corby had been put forward for sentence reductions, but confirmation of the cuts had only recently come through.

“Most of the foreign inmates were involved in drug cases and are serving heavy sentences. That’s why, unlike some other inmates, their remission proposals must be considered very carefully,” he said, explaining the delay. The remissions had to be ratified by the Ministry of Human Rights and Justice before being confirmed.

“The ministry has given the nod for the proposed remission for all 20 foreign inmates,” Wiratna said.

Corby, 34, has been granted a remission of 1.5 months. She was originally jailed for 20 years after trying to smuggle 4.2 kilograms of marijuana into Bali from Australia in 2004.

Renae Lawrence, an Australian woman part of the so-called “Bali Nine” gang of heroin smugglers, received a two-month remission on her 20-year term.

Announcing the remissions, Wiratna also said that prison officials were still awaiting the release of funds from the Justice Ministry to complete renovations and repairs to the facility after extensive damage was caused during riots by inmates in February.

“We are still working in a temporary office in the prison hall as our office building was heavily damaged in the riot,” he said.

Meanwhile, a group of Australian and Indonesian officials met foreign prisoners, including Corby, at the prison last Friday.

The half-hour meeting involved officials from the Australian Embassy and the Indonesian foreign and justice ministries, Corby, members of the Bali Nine and Michael Sacatides, another Australian drug smuggler, serving 18 years for attempting to bring 1.7 kilograms of methamphetamine into Bali.

After the meeting Wiratna said that the officials had simply been checking up on the inmates.

“They just wanted to check the condition of the prisoners, particularly Corby,” he said. “Whether this visit was made in consideration of her ongoing application for clemency, I don’t have the capacity to answer that.”

Corby’s legal team filed a clemency bid with the president in 2010. Last year the national Justice and Human Rights Ministry recommended a five-year cut to the total term,

In recent weeks there have been persistent unconfirmed reports that Corby would be granted clemency as part of a reciprocal arrangement involving similar measures for Indonesians currently jailed in Australia.

The reports prompted Nasir Jamal, a legislator from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), to condemn the idea of Corby receiving remission. He said drugs offenders should receive severe punishment.

“Even if the clemency bid is based on humanitarian reasons, and even if it is intended to get the Australian government to respond in kind towards Indonesian fishermen convicted there of human trafficking, the Justice Ministry and Supreme Court must consider the consequences of recommending clemency,” he said, speaking in Jakarta last Wednesday.

“The ministry and the Supreme Court should consider the impacts of the clemency,” he said, adding that freeing her would send the wrong message to other would-be smugglers.

“Don’t be afraid of denying her clemency,” he said.

  1. Piper says:

The truth of her innocence and how the Australian government hid this from her has been uncovered. It is only a matter of time before the public in Australia realize that they have been lied to, to protect the Macquarie Banks financial interests in the Sydney airport.

  3. Megan says:

I hope she gets released ASAP as she is actually innocent.People smugglers commit a far worse crime to humanity risking the lives of so many men, women and children while taking their life savings to send them onto old, over-crowded, dangerous vessels barely safe enough for fishing! Why would the Indonesian government want these people back? That seems quite interesting to me. Seems they are being protected for some reason. I know many Australians who will not go to Bali simply because they are too scared of being framed the way Schapelle was. I am one of them & yet I donated money to Indonesia when their people needed it. I however don’t want to risk being the next Schapelle Corby so I go to Hong Kong for fun instead. A shame really as Bali is a beautiful place.

  4. John says:

the Australian Government, the Australian Federal Police and the NSW Crime Commission should be deported to Bali and given 20 years for the BIGGEST coverup Australia has ever seen. They lied and now the TRUTH is out FREE SCHAPELLE!!!

  5. MARY says:

It makes me so sick that the Australian Government deceived its people to save their corrupt police and also the governments reputation on why their airports are not secure. Mick Keelty lied when he said there was no inteligence to support corrupt baggage handlers, Mick Keelty knew he had the Report from Alan Kessing … MICK KEELTY IS A LIAR!!!

  6. Garry Smith says:

The people of Australia will be outraged when they read the expendable project website every bit of info on there is undeniable. The Australian media are puppets and only report what the government tells them to report. Its a national disgrace… heads must roll… This injustice has to be rectified!!! As an Australian I am so ashamed

  7. Lee says:

OMG I have just finished reading all the emails from the government and the Australian Federal Police on the expendable project website. OMG how scary that a government could do that to one of their citizens. I guess the Australian public now wont blame Bali for Schapelle and rightly so they need to point the finger at their own Government. I am from the USA and I say Shame on you Australian Government. SHAME.

  8. Celia says:

So glad this is coming out, The expendable project has been online for 7 months and it certainly explains how the MJ got into Schapelle’s bag. What a dirty little secret our government and its departments have kept from us for almost 8 years. They have crucified Schapelle now its time to crucify them. Every Australian must stand up against this great injustice and make sure those accountable STAND TRIAL.

  9. William says:

Thank god for the Bali Times you guys obviously have true reporters who are willing to let the people have their say and not a controlled media like Australia has. I am from the UK and have been following this horror story on Schapelle Corby since day one. Blind Freddy could see that she was innocent, how does one get 4.2kg of weed through 3 airports in Australia without it being detected. Since discovering the expendable project website 4 months ago I was amazed that the media did not cover this HUGE COVERUP at all NOW I understand how THE LAMESTREAM MEDIA WORKS The Australian government pulls their strings. GOOD FOR YOU BALI TIMES FOR LETTING THE PEOPLE HAVE THEIR SAY.

  10. Sally says:

I have always believed in Schapelle’s innocence nothing was ever what it seemed. It is disgusting to find out that the likes of John Howard, Alexander Downer, Chris Ellison and Mick Keelty all knew about it and kept it from the public. The ABC owned by the government also played their part in the deceit with their lies and smear campaign. Australians are waking up. the government and the media can remain silent but the Truth is getting out there. Wont be long until everyone of them are charged with erverting the cause of Justice.

  11. Max says:

Only if you believe the toxic Australian media.
If Corby is innocent then Qantas secuity is flawed.
If Corby is innocent the the Macquarie Bank, the owners of the Sydney airport corporation limited are going to be very embarrassed as the security at Sydney airport is going to be put under the spotlight.
If Sydney airport is not secure post 9/11, passengers, aircraft from all over the world and airports at destinations where the these flights depart to are now unsecure.
If Corby is guilty, she is just a expendable dirty little drug smuggler and that is the lie that the Australian government have had the Australian media perpetuate for the past 7 years. Every news cast reporting a minor story about Schapelle always, without exception starts with “Convicted Drug Smuggler Schapelle Corby” to reinforce in the publics mind the lie that she is guilty.

  12. Shun says:

I wonder how much longer the toxic Australian media can hold out.
They have had the emails between Keelty and Ellison for months now showing that they were aware about her bag being tampered with.
This is the smoking gun that proves she is innocent and yet not a word.
Everyday that goes by is another nail in their coffin. How are they going to explain that they hid this news from the Australian public. We have the emails sent to nearly every media outlet in Australia.
I personally have sent emails to the Today Show, Sunrise, 60 Minutes, Channel Nine, Channel 7, Channel 10, 60 Minutes NZ and most Australian papers.
Expendable have proof that most media outlets log in for hours, they have no excuses.
At least the Bali Times is not afraid to let the truth be told. Thank you.

  13. Bindi says:

On October 8th 2004, it was 100% compulsory by Australian aviation law and DOTORS, for all luggage bound for Indonesia, post 9/11, to be x-ray screened.
This was due to the heightened security at international airports.
This is a fact that can be verified.

On that day there was one item of luggage, baggage number 0881884193 that was not screened and did not receive a SACL (Sydney Airport Corporation Limited) clearance code. This was a dangerous security risk to every passenger on that aircraft.
The one and only item of baggage that was not screened, the one and only item of baggage, that under Australian law, unless screened, was not permitted on the aircraft. Was Schapelle Corby’s boogie board bag.
This is a fact and can be verified.

  14. Morigen says:

Thank you Bali Times for posting the above comments and facts – especially as (in addition), the recently leaked minutes of a 17 October 2005 New South Wales Crime Commission meeting reveal not only the hard evidence of Schapelle’s innocence (listening device material), but also hard evidence pointing to one of the perpetrators of the crime. He was a criminal “Friend” of corrupt Australian policeman Christopher John Laycock, recently jailed on multiple serious charges. These startling facts cannot be hidden for very much longer.

  15. Angie says:

I find it unbelievable that this woman is still in prison. For 7 months we have seen evidence of the disgraceful withholding of evidence by the Australian Government, that without doubt proves her innocence. The media have, and are playing there part in this, by refusing to report the facts available for the world on the expendable site. I am a British citizen, and the thought that my own government could get away with this would sicken me. Shame on you Australia. If this is how you treat your citizens I thank god I am not one of them! Free Schapelle now!!

  16. Lisa says:

Thanks Bali Times for printing these comments discussing the expendable project and the proven innocence of Schapelle Corby. She has massive worldwide support. Can you please do a story on the expendable project and the years of research they’ve put into this case and the mountains of damning evidence they’ve uncovered which prove Schapelle’s innocence. Thank you.

  17. Ruby says:

All these commenters above are placing the blame on the Australian government. What they are foregetting is it was the Indonesian police who contaminated the evidence and refused to fingerprint the bags containing the drugs. The Indonesians refused to allow the testing of the drugs for country of origin. The Indonesians abused Schapelle by parading her in fronT of the media. The Indonesians neglected to take into account that the bag containing the drugs had Schapelle’s name, address and phone number written on it so she clearly was not trying to hide the fact that she owned the bag. The Indonesians handed down a discriminatory sentence of 20 years, the longest sentence in Indonesian history for marijuana importation. The Indonesians accused her of trafficking but not once did they investigate anyone else associated with Schapelle who could have been party to this drug trafficking. It wouldnt have mattered what evidence was provided to prove Schapelle’s innocence, she was going to be found guilty because the Indonesians were determined to make an example of her regardless of her obvious innocence. Here you have TWO countries who have jailed an innocent woman.

  18. Kaycee says:

@ Ruby damn right we are blaming the Australian Government. Had Mark Standen, Assistant Director of NSW Crime Commission and Detective Christopher Laycock (Both now in Prison) not been running drugs through Sydney Airport then the WEED would not have been slipped into Schapelle’s boogie board bag by a corrupt baggage handler who was worried he was being watched. John Howard, Mick Keelty, Alexander Downer, Christopher Ellison etc, etc all knew. THEY ALL KNEW and kept all the vital evidence from Schapelle and the public for 7.5 years. Everything on the Expendable Project is PROVEN by the governments own emails. It cannot be denied.

  19. Fred says:

The hostile and propagandistic output of the Australian media, against a single young woman and her family, is without precedent in the history of Australian journalism. It has embraced smears, fabrications, outright lies, censorship, and a ruthless campaign which has systematically managed the opinion of the Australian public.

This has attracted commentary from a range of sources, for example:

“This is particularly moot with respect to the Schapelle Corby case. Worse still, in this case it has happened over a prolonged period of years. Equally, influence on public opinion via the media within a society is sometimes so unsophisticated and unremitting that it becomes visible outside that society. This to some degree has also transpired here.

Neither is it a question of the odd rogue article or broadcast; it has been systematic. We have seen countless examples of unsubstantiated allegations, and in some cases outright lies. We have seen wide scale censorship, in the form of hard news stories being completely ignored. For any ethical journalist this is deeply disturbing.”

“The real story is how a young powerless woman is being imprisoned for a crime that she probably had nothing to do with. But the Australian media have become her persecutor”.

The Expendable Project has collected a huge library of documentation and information on these activities. A whole series of reports have been produced, and many interviews recorded. The following have been placed in the public domain:

  20. Albert says:

    The ABC
During the last few weeks a number of developments have occurred with respect to
    the ABC.

The first relates to William Moss aka William Miller, who claimed that the marijuana was his in
2005, but was ridiculed by the media. It turned out that the AFP had a recording of him and another criminal discussing the pick-up from Sydney airport, and they have hidden it for 7 years (until an Expendable roject researcher got hold of it).

The media in Australia have not reported any of this, including the ABC. Not a word.

However William Moss aka William Miller who goes by both names was suing the ABC for calling him a liar in 2005… and just 3 days after the Expendable Project report, the ABC settled, handing Mr Moss a cheque, a copy of which Expendable have placed on the website:

when they knew about the nature of the Bali trial, and about the vital
primary evidence they had themselves withheld [Political Seizure Report]

    30. The ABC engaged a clear campaign of hostility against Schapelle Corby

  23. Jane F says:

My god you people are delusional. The woman did the crime and yes, by Australian standards the sentence is harsh….but that is the law in Indonesia and you must respect that. All this expendable garbage is exactly that…there is no real evidence in any of that. I’m sure the girl is suffering…but that is the point…Jail is not supposed to be a holiday…and she is no where near as badly off as many other Australians imprisoned around the world. I’m really sick of hearing about it and I do not think you are doing her any favour. Let her quietly serve out her time and gain her remission like a normal prisoner and she will be home far quicker than what will happen with the supporters carrying on like they are!

  24. Nic Hornby says:

The comments here show that the word is getting out. The 100% innocent Schapelle was SOLD, and brutalized.

No more allegation, FACT. It is written on every government email Expendable has published.

The media in Australia have failed to report a word of it, yet the people are starting to learn anyway. They must take their place in the dock, alongside the corrupt politicians in Howard’s regime.

  25. Simon says:

After reading this article and comments I went to the expendable project site and took a look around wow so much information it takes ages to get through it but well worth the read. I was amazed at all the evidence, I was one who thought she was guilty now I am convinced of her innocence. Oh what a tangled web we weave when we practice to deceive!!! I am angry that the government, the media and the AFP have fooled the people. I am disgusted that they have left her to rot for a crime she did not do. It seems they all protected their mates. It is frightening that the media is silent and the people cannot get it out there. Something has to be done and quickly. We cannot let them get away with this it is outrageous. A Crime against Humanity!

  26. Rob says:

Is there a reason this has not been picked up by foreign media in the US or Europe? Perhaps a run on Oprah like they did for Kony 2012 might get something viral happening in terms of numbers signing up to expendable and sharing the link. Just a thought.

  27. Aussie Expat in Bali says:

While commentary here is relatively tame below is a collection of Expendable Project vocabulary copied from blogs, the expendable site and commentary by members of this cultish group when responding to those whose opinions may differ to their own:
“bitch, fool, maggot, troll, put in front of a firing squad, scum, rot in hell, ugly on the outside ugly on the inside, idiots, future idiots, more maggots, poisonous, crappy , more poisonous, more maggots, ah here is scum again, ruthless organs of state, filth, filth again, grotesque, crushing, brutal, disgrace to humanity, ah maggots again, criminals, filthy media… filthy seems to be popular, sickening, puke, corrupt, more idiots, dirty little secrets, horror story, nail in the coffin, neglected, discriminatory, hostile and propagandistic, embraced smears, fabrications, outright lies, censorship, ruthless campaign, brutal horrendous, stick your sarcasm and correcting me, where the sun does not shine too thanks ,crucify them and one more firing squad”
It makes it very difficult for most people to give credibility to their specious claims. So perhaps if one follows this link the feelings about this kind of rhetoric and vulgar name calling can be best summed up in the pic you will find there.
