Bali ended 2010 with 2.5 million foreign tourists under its belt, 200,000 more than forecast. And Bali Tourism Office head Ida Bagus Subhiksu has said the Hollywood movie Eat Pray Love, starring Julia Roberts, could take a lot of the credit.
The seven largest sources of foreign tourists in 2010 were Australia, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, England, Germany and Singapore.
The Bali office of the Central Bureau of Statistics, which released the figures on Tuesday, said an average of 200,000 foreign tourists a month – nearly 7,000 a day – arrived in Bali for holidays in 2010. The 2011 foreign tourist target is 2.5 to 2.6 million.
There could be more, if the cruise terminal at Tanah Ampo near Padang Bai in Karangasem is completed quickly. Bali’s transportation chief I Made Santa said this week 200 cruise ships had booked calls there for 2011 but work on extending the pier, originally built half size, had still not been completed.
Indonesia and Singapore agreed last week to jointly develop cruise tourism.
