A 39-year-old mother hanged herself and her two-year-old child at their home at Taman Jimbaran, apparently over debts of Rp150 million (US$16,600) owed to loan sharks who were pressing for repayment.
Police said relatives of the woman had told them she had run up debts associated with the collapse of a cooperative business and had no way of making the payments. She had offered her house as security for the debt.
The woman’s elder son, 12, found his mother and sibling dead in the bathroom, hanging from the ceiling, when he returned home from school last Tuesday.
The woman’s 42-year-old husband works in Nusa Dua.
South Kuta Police chief Nanang Prihasmoko said relatives and neighbours had said she had been behaving erratically over several weeks.
“More debt was piling up and this evidently made her desperate,” he said.
The bodies were taken this week to a funeral home in Tabanan, the family’s place of origin.
