Viral Video: Tourist Clashes with Security at Besakih Temple

Karangasem – A video capturing a foreign tourist angrily confronting a security guard, known as pecalang, at Pura Agung Besakih in Rendang, Karangasem, went viral on social media on Tuesday.

The tourist was reportedly upset after being admonished and barred by the local pecalang from entering Besakih Temple. Jero Mangku Widiarta, the head of Besakih Traditional Village, stated that he has not received detailed information about the incident.

He explained that there are specific guidelines, known as tate-titi, which everyone, including tourists, must follow to enter the main area of Pura Agung Besakih. Visitors must wear traditional Balinese attire and bring complete offerings for prayer.

“We have instructed the pecalang to prevent anyone who does not adhere to these guidelines from entering the main area of Pura Agung Besakih to preserve the temple’s sanctity,” Widiarta said on Tuesday (June 25, 2024).

Typically, tourists are informed about these guidelines when purchasing tickets at the front office. Widiarta emphasized that tourists who comply with the rules are usually escorted by the pecalang.

“We hope that such incidents are not judged prematurely so that the true nature of the event can be understood,” Widiarta added.
