I Dewa Putu Putrayasa Batuan, 73 is a retired teacher from Ubud who now owns an art gallery and a restaurant. He has six children and 16 grandchildren.

Selling my paintings has helped me to improve my social life and has opened up a whole new world
What’s most important?
Love, gratitude and sincerity in all aspects of life. These attitudes will reduce the number of conflicts in this world.
What advice would you give the younger generations?
You need to love your job and enjoy your life. Don’t just always think about glamour.
Are you worried about dying?
I believe I can find peace when I die. I just hope death doesn’t hurt.
When was the happiest time of your life?
In 1968, when I started selling my paintings and could make more money to feed my family and buy them clothes.
And the worst?
The years before I started selling my paintings, I was working as a teacher. I wasn’t paid enough to feed my family. I had three kids at that time.
What’s humanity all about?
Peace and happiness.
Why are there so many conflicts in the world?
Because people don’t understand what the meaning of life is. They are too materialistic and they need more education about morality.
Is a peaceful world possible?
Absolutely. Life is a cycle. It starts from bad, becomes good and back to bad and good again. This world used to be peaceful; now there are a lot of conflicts; but it will be back to being peaceful, I believe.
How old do you feel?
As old as I am now. I never feel younger.
Is one lifetime enough?
No. As a Balinese person I believe in reincarnation.
How has Bali changed?
Bali is too crowded now. There used to be lots of ricefields and only a few houses. But now it’s the other way around. The education is quite good but some people just don’t understand its use.
Has tourism been good for Bali?
It has some positive and negative effects. People learn about a different religions and culture. The negative effect is that people are becoming more materialistic.
What’s the major difference between the East and the West?
People in the East are more religious. Western people think about life as a straight line but Eastern people think that life is a cycle.
Have you ever doubted your religion?
What makes you so sure about it?
I believe that all religions are moral if people follow them with full sincerity.
