What’s the greatest lesson life has taught you?
That you have to be honest in what you do and say.
What’s most important?
Love. We need loving people around us who can help us when we need help and make life easier.
What were your dreams as a child?
I dreamed of being a good lawar (popular jackfruit and meat-based dish) maker, and when I grew up I was very good lawar maker. Many people liked my lawar and there was always a queue.
What advice would you give to the younger generations?
Be diligent and as good as you can in everything you do, and get as much experience as you can.
Are you worried about dying?
No, I’m not. I’ve been very close to death four times, and I don’t fear it. It’s up to God, and when he wants me to pass then it’s my time.
What do you think will happen to you after you die?
I’ll be in a dark world, where everything is dark and I can’t see anything.
When was the happiest time of your life?
When I was young and strong and able to work in the ricefields.
And the worst?
Now. Especially when I’m sick. I’m so weak I can’t stand by myself.
What’s humanity all about?
It’s about sharing what you have with those around you.
Why are there so many conflicts in the world?
Maybe it is because of lobha (greed). People always want more and are never satisfied with what they have.
Is a peaceful world an impossible dream?
It wouldn’t be if people were willing to be nice and to help each other.
Are you disappointed with your life or happy at what’s happened?
I’m happy. I have a happy and healthy family – and a wife who’s 60 years younger than me.
How much has luck played in your life?
A lot – from the time I was young until now.
Has life been a battle or relative plain sailing?
How old do you feel?
Very old and very weak.
How do you regard the aging process?
I don’t have any thoughts about it; I just let it happen.
Is there anything left to do?
Yes. I want to know more about the world outside Bali, especially Java. Bali and Java have many things in common that I want to know more about.
Is one lifetime enough?
No. I want to be incarnated and feel young again – and get as many girls as I used to. (BT/AJ)
