Randy Cohen, from Mount Sinai Hospital (New York, USA), and colleagues reviewed 10 relevant studies involving data collected on over 137,000 people, to ascertain the impact of sense of purpose on death rates and risk of cardiovascular events. The researchers observed that people having a high sense purpose were at lower risks of heart disease and stroke. As well, the data suggested that those with a low sense of purpose are more likely to die or experience cardiovascular events. The lead author comments that: ““Developing and refining your sense of purpose could protect your heart health and potentially save your life.”
Dr. Klatz observes: “A number of previous studies link mental health with physical heath, with anxiety, depression, and anger suggested as psychological factors in heart disease. This study data suggests that having a high sense of purpose may lower your risk of death, heart disease, or stroke”
Sitting Raises Heart Disease Risk Factor
Jacquelyn Kulinski, from the Medical College of Wisconsin (Wisconsin, USA), and colleagues analyzed heart scans and physical activity records of over 2,000 adults living in Dallas (Texas, USA). The data revealed that each hour of sedentary time per day on average associated with a 14% increase in coronary artery calcification (CAC) burden – a measure of the amount of plaque in the coronary arteries. The association was independent of exercise activity and other traditional heart disease risk factors.
Remarks Dr. Goldman: “Mounting evidence warns of the life-shortening effects of too much sitting. Regardless of exercise, sitting for many hours a day raises a person’s level of coronary artery calcification (CAC).”
Mushrooms Modulate Blood Sugar
WJA Banukie, from University of Sri Jayewardenepura (Sri Lanka), and colleagues enrolled 88 healthy men and women, in a study in which subjects were randomly assigned to one of four groups: a powdered preparation of American oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) (50 mg/kg/body weight); a powdered preparation of abalone mushroom (Pleurotus cystidiosus) (50 mg/kg/body weight); or two control groups. The team also assigned 14 type-2 diabetics to receive the mushroom preparations (50 mg/kg/body weight). The study period was two weeks. Among the healthy subjects, the oyster mushroom extract reduced fasting glucose by 6.1% and post-meal glucose by 16.4%; and the abalone mushroom extract reduced fasting glucose by 6.4% and post-meal glucose by 12.1%.; Among the type-2 diabetic subjects, fasting and post-meal glucose significantly improved, while insulin levels increased. Both mushrooms were associated with increases in glucokinase secretion and decreases in glycogen synthase kinase, which promotes the formation of glycogen in the liver from glucose.
Comments Dr. Klatz: “Low in calories, fat-free, cholesterol-free and very low in sodium, mushrooms promote healthy weight, boost immune function, and serve as a convenient way to achieve Vitamin D levels. Sri Lanka researchers report that extracts of American oyster and abalone mushrooms beneficially impact insulin levels, among diabetic men and women.”
