From the perspective of Bathari, 24, an English proofreader from Surabaya.

What are we here for?
Since I believe in God, I’m here to please God and to be good to other people. That’s what I have been told to do.

Do you believe in the Big Bang theory that the circa-13.7-billion-year-old universe and all that’s in it was created by a massive explosion of enormously dense matter at what may have been the beginning of time?
Yes. It’s scientifically proven.

If there is a God, where is he?
God is all around us.

Is there a mystery to life?
No. Everything is explainable either scientifically or religiously. For example hell and heaven are all explained in the holy book and I believe in this explanation.

Do you think we’re alone in the universe?
No. I think it’s possible that other living organisms exist in other planets. This universe is vast and anything is possible.

There is a theory that there may be parallel universes with exact copies of us – doppelgangers – doing exactly the same thing as us right now. What do you think about that?
I don’t think so, because we would have known it by now.

What do you think happens to people when they die?

Their souls live on in another life.

Where is your soul and what is it?

It’s our basic entity and it’s everywhere inside us.

Science says that all matter and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore, will our energy, in the form of our soul, live on for infinity?
Yes. It will live in the afterlife as it’s explained in the holy book.

Do you know your place in the universe?

I am a temporary living being, one of the many. I’m here to make a positive contribution to the community where I belong to.

Some people believe that because we are made of the same matter as the universe – carbon, and other elements, like nitrogen – anything we ask it will be attracted to us, popularised recently in the movie The Secret. What’s your view?
I don’t believe it because I believe that we can’t get something unless we work hard for it.

Are we being observed?
Yes. I believe we are being observed by God because I have faith.

If there is a God, why does he allow such colossal suffering of people on Earth, either through war, disease or natural disasters?
Because it’s a test for human beings to see how we deal with problems in life.
