The central government is planning to boost promotion of marine tourism potential in various areas in Indonesia, Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Sharif Cicip Sutardjo said here on Sunday.
“Promotion of marine tourism will be focused more on conservation efforts while also explore the economical potential from the tourism sites,” said the minister.
Sharif took example of Raja Ampat district, West Papua province, which has been announced as National Water Conservation Area (KKPN) sometime ago. The preservation efforts in Raja Ampat and the promotion of tourism potential in the area have given economical and ecological benefit to the local people.
“People are now more aware of the importance of preserving Raja Ampat waters from man-made damages such as fishing using bomb,” said Minister Sharif.
One of the government’s efforts to promote marine tourism in Indonesia is by organizing annual event Sail Indonesia.
Since 2009, Indonesia has organized the annual Sail Indonesia five times which was held in five different locations namely Sail Bunaken in 2009, Sail Banda in 2010, Sail Wakatobi- Belitong in 2011, Sail Morotai in 2012 and Sail Komodo in 2013.
The latest Sail Indonesia was held in Raja Ampat district starting from August 17 to 23. The event was participated in by people from Malaysia, Australia, the Netherlands, Thailand, The Philippines and the United States.
