Mesuryak, the Culmination of Kuningan Celebration

Residents in Bongan village, Tabanan, Bali, have a unique ritual called mesuryak to celebrate Kuningan holy day. The ceremony to throw money which then will be scrambled over is believed to be the facilitator to escort ancestors to heaven.

The chief of Bongan Gede customary village, I Made Wardana stated that mesuryak tradition by spreading certain amount of money every Kuningan holy day.

“We believe the ancestors return home at Kuningan so we escort them with cheering, throwing money. This tradition aims to guide the ancestor spirits return to heaven by ‘ mesuryak ‘ or rejoice by distributing money, “said Wardana, after holding the tradition in Tabanan, Bali, on Saturday.

Money in various denominations is to be scrambled over by the citizens, starting from Rp1,000 to Rp100,000. Once the money was thrown, then the residents squeezed to get it as fast as possible. All people especially children and teenagers wait for this tradition because they had the opportunity to get the money distributed by the citizens.

This ritual, Wardana continued, is the culmination of the celebration of Galungan and Kuningan in his village. The tradition of throwing money to deliver the ancestors after ten days fell from heaven during the celebration of Galungan.

“This hereditary tradition by throwing money also has the meaning of prosperity. Money is symbolized as an expression of gratitude to Ida Sang Hyang Widhi. The tradition of escorting ancestor is also known as ngulihang,” he added.

According to Wardana, mesuryak tradition in the past was done by using coins. Along with the changing times, they change it into nominal of Rp1000 to Rp100,000.

“Even those coming from wealthy families could spend their money up to millions rupiah so it is automatically more exciting and invite other citizens of all ages to join,” he said.
