Thousands Sent Abroad as Migrant Workers

The government of Bali has sent thousands of migrant workers to 17 countries to work in tourism and on cruise ships, to counter the lack of job opportunities in the province, it said this week.

A total of 16,150 people have been sent to work abroad since 2001, it said.

“Migrant workers from Bali are only interested in working on cruise ships or in hotels and restaurants. They show no interest in jobs outside those sectors,” said Ketut Necher, head of Worker Placement at the Bali Employment Office.
